LEG 6 TSARINE – MARATHON

IDEAL KM 225km

ESTIMATED TIME 19 h

" I have always loved the desert. You sit down on a sand dune, see nothing, hear nothing. Yet through the silence something shines…”

What better way to finish this rally on a high note than a Marathon leg? The Gazelles set off one last time from the bivouac , feeling emotional. The next time they see it will be to determine their final rankings and finish this monumental sporting event.

The Djebel Bani ('old mountain' in Arabic)will watch over the teams as they set off in search of the straightest line possible.
It's time to deploy a final strategy : hope that the top teams make an error or a bad navigation choice; take risks by opting for shorter but tougher passages… All strategies are good if they help grab a spot in the rankings.

On the afternoon of the first day, the leading teams will attack the dunes. Erg Chegaga is every bit as impressive as Erg Chebbi , encountered during Leg 2: it is longer (40km), wider and wilder. Its sand is not the same color and its dunes are the highest in Morocco. The highest is over 300 meters.. Teams will feel they are surfing on this sand, which can sometimes be quite unstable, for example on a part of the dune exposed to the wind.

In the evening, teams will set up camp in the sand and enjoy a quiet evening before tomorrow's final day of competition.

On Day 6 of Leg XNUMX, the goal is to get out of Erg Chigaga. Once out of these beautiful sandy hills, the Gazelles will make their way to the last bivouac.

The course still promises a few wonders. The teams will cross Lake Iriki, which has been dry since the construction of the Al Mansour dam in 1971 and the decline in rainfall.

Then the Gazelles will cross the final finish line, an emotional moment filled with immense pride and joy at having completed the rally, but tinged with regret… not wanting to leave this beautiful place, wanting to prolong this timeless experience a little longer...

As Antoine de Saint Exupéry expressed so well in The Little Prince:
"The real journey is not to cross the desert or to cross great distances, it is to reach an exceptional point where the flavor of the moment bathes all the contours of the inner life."
